“To solve most of the major problems facing our country today — from wiping out terrorism to minimizing global environmental problems to eliminating the scourge of AIDS — will require every young person to learn more about other regions, cultures, and languages.”

—Former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, “Closing the K-12 International Knowledge Gap: Putting the World into World Class,” Asia Society, 2003

Funding Opportunities for Students

Students are encouraged to apply to a wide array of awards when seeking funding to participate in a Flagship program.

Graduate Fellowships

Applicants to post-baccalaureate Flagship programs may apply for Flagship Fellowships and David L. Boren Fellowships.
Students may also be eligible for fellowships under the Fulbright-Hays Act, the Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Program Fellowships, and Title VIII Fellowships. Availability for such funding depends on the language and the institution. Please check with your institution to see if such funding is available.

Undergraduate Scholarships

Applicants to undergraduate Flagship programs may apply for David L. Boren Scholarships, SMART grants, the Academic Competitive Grants Program, and others.
In addition, each Flagship institution offers some funding for exceptional applicants to undergraduate Flagship programs.

Funding Opportunities for Institutions

The Language Flagship is dedicated to promoting opportunities for U.S. institutions of higher education to develop advanced programs in languages that are important to the future of the United States. Through partnerships with current Flagship institutions The Language Flagship has helped create twelve innovative programs at leading U.S. universities to teach less commonly taught languages.
