What can you specifically do to help?

An active partnership between government, education, and business will bring the success of The Language Flagship models to the entire nation, leveraging the investment of the federal government to the benefit of both private and public sectors.  Continued input from the business sector will sharpen our insights into language and cultural factors that affect business’ success.  Your engagement will ensure that businesses continue to be competitive in both global and domestic economies.

Offer Internships for Flagship Students

Our Flagship students must all partake in an internship overseas in their chosen language and field.  These internships are at a professional level, geared to compliment their university studies with domain-oriented, hands-on experience leveraging their advanced language skills.  Additionally, students benefit from domestically-based internships in which they can use their language skills and increase their knowledge of professional workplace.   All internship offers much be coordinated through a Flagship Center or Flagship Partner Program.

Support Scholarships for Flagship Students

We encourage individuals and companies to support scholarships for Flagship students.  Providing scholarship support for their year overseas will greatly relieve them of financial burdens so that they may concentrate on polishing their language and cultural skills while abroad (studying and in their professional-level internship).  You may collaborate with a Flagship institution to provide scholarship support; or you may choose to donate at a national level to support a variety of Flagship students from around the United States.

Broaden the Awareness of the Role and Value of Languages

The Language Flagship welcomes the involvement of the business sector and of individuals who can contribute to broadening the awareness of the role and value of languages in the public and private sectors; to individuals; and to society.   Engaging in dialogue at the local, state, regional, or national level strengthens the visibility of the importance of language and cultural skills.   Offering to be interviewed; to serve on a panel; to give a speech to a business, educational or government forum all contributes to broader awareness.   We welcome your insights and suggestions for engagement.
